Students need a lot of practice with fractions– and what better way to make Math fun than with a Pizza Fractions Game? In this Pizza Fractions Game, students work through questions and click on the answer they think is correct.
For example: Sandy comes in with a group of hungry friends. If large pizzas each have 12 slices, how many large pizzas should her group of 6 order so that each person can eat 3 slices?
Putting traditional Fraction questions in the setting of a colorful, online game makes students more engaged and excited about practicing their Math. Fractions and pizza games go hand in hand!
Google Slide games are great independent activities for early finishers or students who want extra practice. I also love Google Slide games because they are no-prep and self-checking, so students can work through the problem until they have reached the correct answer. Because of the nature of Google Slides, a record of student answers cannot be kept digitally, although when I use Google Slide games in my classroom I have my students record their answers on a worksheet. One of the benefits of playing video games in class is that students move at their own pace through practice questions. Pizza fractions games allow students to review math on their own speed and often, students will move more energetically than if they were working on a worksheet. Math games allow students to become engaged and immersed in the material in a way that is more fun than a traditional worksheet.
In general there are many ways that implementing games in the classroom enhances learning for students. I have taught students successfully at the college, high school, and middle school level implementing games daily and kept a 100% pass rate even at the AP level. Some teachers are hesitant to let the chaos of gaming into the classroom– and I get it! Here are my favorite tips for classroom gaming:
No games with “turns” or “outs”, so students are intellectually stimulated the entire game
Allow the time spent “playing” create space for you to transition from teacher to observer! Walk around and see what your students are able to achieve
Consider pre-made games for HW or independent activities – students ask me to make extra games for them to practice on their own time (use games to engage students with the material).
