Latin Video Game via Google Slides
Even in the classroom, student engagement is a tricky game. Distance learning has given an opportunity for teachers to embrace the challenge of student engagement even more. After finding a rhythm with remote teaching, I found myself looking for ways to reach outside of the box of my normal assignments and activities. You can find my most frequently used remote learning tools in a blog post here.
After implementing gamification to my lesson plans for the first three quarters of school, I knew I wanted to infuse game aspects into a new kind of assignment. After being inspired by a game made by Spaids in the Classroom, I started developed my first Latin video game.
Within the Latin video game, students work through 6 levels: Rome, the sea, Neptune, Pluto, Mount Olympus, and Jupiter. Each level has 3 Latin grammar questions. These questions were useful review for my Level 1 7th and 8th grade Latin students. If the students click on the incorrect answer, there is a page that indicates how they can try again. If they answer correctly, they see the page with Minerva, goddess of wisdom, and they can click to advance to the next Latin question.
Level 4 is my personal favorite, when students descend into the underworld! You can see the Latin video game I’ve made here.
