How I Lesson Plan as a Latin Teacher

My school operates on a 7-day rotation schedule where a class sees you 6 out of every 7 days. So, I have divided my beginner Latin grammar topics into 6-day units. Here is what works for me when I design lessons for these 6-day units. My students (and my own brain) appreciate the routine it provides.

  • Day 1: Quizlet Learn for new vocabulary & Vocabulary Notes with English Derivatives. Homework is studying vocabulary & completing a crossword puzzle. My crossword puzzles are graded for accuracy and spelling, and students may use there notes.

  • Day 2: Guided Grammar Notes on our current topic. Homework is Wizer (free online worksheets)

  • Day 3: Online Nearpod to review new grammar topic. Homework is Quizizz (free online questions that grade the answers automatically).

  • Day 4: Story Translation Day. Homework is a paper worksheet.

  • Day 5: Practice Test & then reviewing for the Test with Battle Royale on Blooket. We also talk about what skills (Vocabulary, Grammar Charts, Translation, Noun Functions, and Derivatives) their strengths and weaknesses are based on past performance and how to study each skill.

  • Day 6: Test. After students finish, they begin Quizlet Learn for the next unit!

Each day we also do a warm-up that reviews translation and grammar. There are also other games we play in class not listed here, but covered in this blog and in this blog. Keep reading for how I integrate these activities and to find links to my free Latin resources!

Beginner Latin Homework Worksheets: Free Resources

I do not give paper worksheets every night, since I use online homework assignments that grade my students’ work automatically most nights. I do think it is important for students to have handwritten practice, so we do use paper worksheets about once a week. Click here to access the 15+ free worksheets I have made for my students! Nota Bene: You will see slight variations of some worksheets among these free Latin resources, so that my students are not tempted to copy off of each other!

Beginner Latin Crossword Puzzles: Free Resources

I make crossword puzzle assignments that review both vocabulary and grammar. Click here to access 20 free practice tests I have made for my students! Nota Bene: These are Google Docs and editable, so feel free to edit things out that don’t apply to your class, or use as homework/practice! Beginner Latin Practice Tests: Free Resources

Each unit (7 school days) my students take an assessment that covers: Vocabulary, Grammar Charts, Translation, Noun Functions, Derivatives, and Culture. Because I teach middle school, I help my students prepare by going through a practice assessment on the day before. Click here to access 13 free practice tests I have made for my students! Nota Bene: These are Google Docs and editable, so feel free to edit things out that don’t apply to your class, or use as homework/practice! Also, you will see slight variations of some worksheets among these free Latin resources, so that my students are not tempted to copy off of each other! As with all of my free Latin resources, I am sharing a very raw version, so please feel free to edit for your own classes.

Other & Online Latin Learning Games and Activities

Integrating games and activities into your Latin lessons can make the learning process more enjoyable and effective. There are several free online resources that offer interactive Latin games and activities, allowing students to practice their language skills in a fun and engaging way.

One such resource is "Quizlet," which provides a wide range of Latin vocabulary quizzes and flashcards. Students can compete with each other or challenge themselves to improve their knowledge of Latin words and phrases. The platform also allows teachers to create custom quizzes and share them with their students, tailoring the learning experience to their specific needs. I use the paid Teacher version of Quizlet, which allows me to see how much my students have studied each set. That way, I can mark down a grade for studying vocabulary!

Memrise!

Another website, Memrise, operates similarly and we occasionally use Memrise for verb practice!

I’ve mentioned these before in other blog posts, but here are some of my other favorite free online Latin teaching resources that grade assignments automatically:
